In this entry, I thought Id prove to you that MIT students really do read by telling you what I thought of various books that I enjoyed, despised, or wholeheartedly attempted to read this summer. Of course, I turned down a job as head literary critic for the New York Times to come to MIT, so Im a total authority on all of this. Plus, Im worth $1,680,000, so you know you can respect my opinion. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (Jonathan Safran Foer) His first novel, Everything is Illuminated, is my second-favorite book, with a sparkling, majestic portrayal of an imaginary shtetl, risky literary devices that actually succeed, and Alexs unforgettable, guileless narration. So, I knew his second book would be a total letdown because I found the first so amazing. Its about a boy whose father died in 9/11, so its a quite depressing read, although Foer does find several new (to me) ways of expressing grief, and there are a few amazing passages, including an elementary school staging of Hamlet and the firebombing of Dresden. My main complaint was that Everything Is Illuminated, though carefully constructed, never seemed that way because the writing was so natural. This time, I knew all of Foers old tricks, and his new ones werent so impressiveit often felt like Foer writing rather than Oskar Schell talking, which is something I could never say about Alex Perchov. Portnoys Complaint (Philip Roth) This is essential reading for every male in Western society, I think. I dont think theres any way that a female could possibly enjoy this book. Roth can really write, and I want to get acquainted with some of his less prurient works. The Day of the Locust (Nathanael West) This book is the origin of the name Homer Simpson, although I dont see how Matt Groening used Wests character as a model, really. The novel was okay, but The Great Gatsby is basically the same book, only much better, and youve probably already read that one. West is generally an excellent writer, but Id only recommend his Miss Lonelyhearts, about a newspaper columnist who keeps having creepy symbolic nightmares. The Dream Life of Balso Snell (Nathanael West) This is total crap. I read it because West only wrote four novellas and Id read the other three. A guy crawls into the anus mirabilis of a wooden horse and then West just wrote whatever weird ideas popped into his head. Its only sixty pages long, but each page you read subtracts one day from your life. There is one interesting thinga sect of Christianity that worships a flea that lodged itself in baby Jesuss skin. There, I saved you the trouble. Animal Farm (George Orwell) This was $2.50 at the Harvard Bookstore used, so I figured Id pick it up. I took it on an eight-hour train ride back home without realizing it only takes two hours to read. Its enjoyable and well-written (in the style of a childrens book), and thematically important enough that everybody should probably read it on some rainy afternoon or bus trip. Snow in August (Pete Hammill) I started this one during a particularly hot week in Boston; it was kind of like wishful thinking on my part. This ones a pretty good realistic portrayal of a poor boy growing up with his mother in New York. However, I find it hard to take seriously any book that includes a fart joke, even if its made by lovable Rabbi Judah Hirsch (named after the Taxi actor?). Also, I found the last fifty pages horrible and offensive on a basic moral level, but you might love them. A Prayer for Owen Meany (John Irving) This might be my third-favorite book now; its terribly long and compendious in its description of Vietnam-Era Gravesend, New Hampshire, but Irvings writing is so conversational and flowing that I barely noticed the length. Owen Meany is one of the least forgettable characters Ive ever encountered, and there was one passage so powerful that I was afraid to turn a page for five minutes. Heck, it begins with a foul ball accidentally killing the narrators mother at a little league gamethat alone is worth the price of admission. Light in August (William Faulkner) Ive liked all the short stories of Faulkners Ive read, so I thought Id give this one a shot. Its good and not as difficult to read as most modernism, but its the most sweltering book Ive ever readeverything is about shoveling sawdust and smoking cigarettes and being dirty and sweaty in the middle of the summer in Mississippi. When it got to be 90 degrees in Boston, I just couldnt take art imitating life any more, so I stopped a quarter of the way through. Ill try to pick it up again in IAP. Fight Club (Chuck Palahniuk) Ive actually never seen the movie, and I was glad that I had no basis of comparison. There are a lot of powerful passages in here, either in terms of deep paranoia or ultraviolence. I found it sometimes hard to read, because a lot of bad Xanga entries have ripped off Palahniuks short, choppy, violent style. However, I assume the Xanga writers have imitated Palahniuk rather than the other way around, so, even though I really, really hate one-sentence paragraphs, Ill semi-enthusiastically recommend this one. Vernon God Little (DBC Pierre) Its about a school shooting and reality television. Take from that what you will. Vernon isnt the most likable narrator ever, which started to turn me off about a third of the way through. However, he complains less and does more interesting stuff as the book goes on, and winds up in the most satisfying ending Ive encountered since The Shawshank Redemption. A great book, almost worth it just for Pierres mixed metaphors describing the smells and squalor of small-town life in Texas. Brave New World (Aldous Huxley) This is Ruths favorite book, I think, so she lent it to me. Im not quite done yet, but I think Im through all the important parts. The writing style and technological references are a little dated, but the ideas and themes arent at all. Its longer and somewhat more ponderous than Animal Farm and 1984, but it definitely had a lot more of an impact on the way I view our society than either of those did. Well, Ive done a lot better than last summer, when all I got through was Wests other two novellas. Anyway, Im headed to the beach next week, and Ive got three books for thatThe World According to Garp (John Irving), Cosmopolis (Don DeLillo), and Guns, Germs, and Steel (Jared Diamond). Ive started on the last one and Im really excited about it; Ive always had an interest in the evolution of humans from monkey to Mozart (I did my AP Bio research paper on hominid bipedalism), and Diamond seems to be a pretty fair and well-researched writer. Today I talked to Allisons Dad and I found out that when he went to the beach, he read a bunch of mystery novels from the 1980s starring Eleanor Roosevelt as the detective. However, theyre apparently out of print and available only on certain online auction sites. Otherwise, Id totally be there. I was going to link to all of the books above, but I feel like a certain internet book seller doesnt need any more hits from my blog readers. Plus, its already been advertised extensively by another mitblogger. Anyway, I have confidence that you guys are competent enough to seek out these books if youre really interested. Just like anyone else, I have had many influences in my life, some good, some bad, and they all cross my mind when I have to make a big decision. Over all the ones that do come across my mind my mom impacts my decision the most. Parents can be the most important, and are normally the most important and effective influence in children growing up. My mom definitely had that effective on me in a good way. She is the first to come to my mind when I’m trying to figure out the right thing to do. But like I said, I have many other influences, and they also affect my decisions. My friends are a big part in my life and I think because I’m around them most, they are the second biggest influence to me. I fe el that friends, in most people’s lives are a huge influence because of the amount of time spent with them and the pressure that is put on by them. Without my friends I would be completely different than I am now. Friends have impacted me since I was just a kid, like influencing the kind of toys I would play with, the cartoons I would watch and basically everything I thought was â€Å"cool†. Growing up my friends got me into the music I listen to and the sports I play. In 7th grade they all got me to join ski-club with them at our school and got me into snowboarding. They had all been doing it for about a year but I never really got into it until ski-club. I ended up really liking it and have been doing it ever since, so I’m grateful for my friends encouraging me to get into it. Friends obviously aren’t always the best influence, especially in a teenager’s life. You see it all the time how friends pressure friends to do stupid things. Me and my group in middle school and high school weren’t exactly the staff’s favorite students. We weren’t all that bad; I guess we just always felt the need to entertain ourselves in some unusual ways. For example, tackling the huge Christmas tree our school set up every year or bringing our skateboards to school and skating around the halls jumping down the stairs until we were caught and someone would take them away. I did a lot of stupid things in school, and a lot of those ideas if not all of them were influenced by my friends. But I’ve never really been in a serious amount of trouble, so I don’t regret any of it. It just made for some good stories and funny memories. I would probably be a â€Å"momma’s boy† if it wasn’t for my dad. He definitely toughened me up in every aspect of my life and taught me a lot that I am grateful for. When I was younger my dad inspired me to start playing baseball and football and was a great at home coach. He helped me get a good jump start, and I think is a big reason I excelled in the sports I played. Even with skateboarding and snowboarding, which he knew nothing about, he would try to help me with it as much as he could. He pushed me to keep working at my goal until I achieved it. Every car I have had would have probably blown up on me within the first month if it wasn’t for him. It always amazed me how much he knew about cars, I would stand there with a confused look on my face whenever he would try to explain something about my car to me. Luckily, I have picked up at least a few things along the way and can keep my car running. The thing I appreciate the most about my dad is how accepting he is. Whatever it I want in life he doesn’t criticize me for it. He just encourages me to do whatever it is I feel I need to do. He gives great advice and has toughened me up mentally, teaching me not to let others bring me down and to go after what I want. In m y life so far there have been many people that have helped make me into the person I am today. They all influence the way I think and act, but the person who has made the biggest and most positive impact is my mom. My mom is 45 years old, was raised in Cuyahoga Falls, is the best cook I have ever come across, and loves taking care of her family. She has shown me, along with my two older brothers and younger sister, important virtues to help us succeed through life. Growing up my mom wasn’t really as strict as the other parents, and obviously me and my siblings enjoyed that, but we didn’t take advantage of it. She was lenient with us, but if we screwed up we would lose that trust and be put on a shorter leash until we could gain it back. I think it worked out because she gave us a good example to go by, that example being herself. She is a very polite person and treats her friends and family with love and respect. She always told me that If I wanted something I ha d to go after it and put everything I had into it. She taught me how to stick with things and get things done. I hated school for the most part, but I knew I needed to get through it to accomplish my goals and my mom helped me through that. She always has time for me if I need help with school, girls, or any advice I need I know I can go to her. If she ever saw that maybe I was going to give up on something she would help me push through. A couple of years ago my mom did something huge for me and helped me get back into my faith. We started going back to church together and since then I think we have both been happier people. My religion is a big influence in my life and I’m just really thankful that my mom did that for me. She has influenced my life greatly on the way I act and think things through. I still go to her for advice a lot and go back and think of the things she has taught me and it always help me make the right decision in the end. I am really grateful to have her in my life, she has taught me so much and I know she’s not done teaching me. She has helped me become the person I am today and I would be a lot less driven without her.

Biography of Idi Amin, Brutal Dictator of Uganda

Idi Amin (c. 1923–August 16, 2003), who became known as the Butcher of Uganda for his brutal, despotic rule as the President of Uganda in the 1970s, is perhaps the most notorious of Africas post-independence dictators. Amin seized power in a military coup in 1971, ruled over Uganda for eight years, and imprisoned or killed at least 100,000 of his opponents. He was ousted in 1979 by Ugandan nationalists, after which he went into exile. Deserted by his father at an early age, he was brought up by his mother, an herbalist and diviner. Amin was a member of the Kakwa ethnic group, a small Islamic tribe that had settled in the region. Success in the Kings African Rifles Amin received little formal education. In 1946, he joined Britains colonial African troops known as the Kings African Rifles (KAR) and served in Burma, Somalia, Kenya (during the British suppression of the Mau Mau), and Uganda. Although he was considered a skilled soldier, Amin developed a reputation for cruelty and was almost cashiered on several occasions for excessive brutality during interrogations. Nevertheless, he rose through the ranks, reaching sergeant major before finally being made an effendi, the highest rank possible for a black African serving in the British army. Amin was also an accomplished athlete, holding Ugandas light heavyweight boxing championship title from 1951 to 1960. A Violent Start As Uganda approached independence, Amins close colleague  Apollo Milton Obote, the leader of the Uganda Peoples Congress (UPC), was made chief minister and then prime minister. Obote had Amin, one of only two high-ranking Africans in the KAR, appointed as first lieutenant of the Ugandan Army. Sent north to quell cattle stealing, Amin perpetrated such atrocities that the British government demanded he be prosecuted. Instead, Obote arranged for him to receive further military training in the U.K. Soldier for the State On his return to Uganda in 1964, Amin was promoted to major and given the task of dealing with an army in mutiny. His success led to a further promotion to colonel. In 1965, Obote and Amin were implicated in a deal to smuggle gold, coffee, and ivory out of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. A parliamentary investigation demanded by President Edward Mutebi Mutesa II put Obote on the defensive. Obote promoted Amin to general and made him chief-of-staff, had five ministers arrested, suspended the 1962 constitution, and declared himself president. Mutesa was forced into exile in 1966 after government forces, under the command of Amin, stormed the royal palace. Coup dEtat Idi Amin began to strengthen his position within the Army using the funds obtained from smuggling and from supplying arms to rebels in southern Sudan. He also developed ties with British and Israeli agents in the country. President Obote first responded by putting Amin under house arrest. When this failed to work, Amin was sidelined to a non-executive position in the Army. On January 25, 1971, while Obote was attending a meeting in Singapore, Amin led a coup detat, taking control of the country and declaring himself president. Popular history recalls Amins declared title to be His Excellency President for Life, Field Marshal Al Hadji Doctor Idi Amin, VC, DSO, MC, Lord of All the Beasts of the Earth and Fishes of the Sea, and Conqueror of the British Empire in Africa in General and Uganda in Particular. Amin was initially welcomed both within Uganda and by the international community. President Mutesa—fondly known as King Freddie—had died in exile in 1969, and one of Amins earliest acts was to have the body returned to Uganda for a state burial. Political prisoners (many of whom were Amin followers) were freed and the Ugandan Secret Police was disbanded. At the same time, however, Amin formed killer squads to hunt down Obotes supporters. Ethnic Purging Obote  took refuge in Tanzania, from where, in 1972, he attempted unsuccessfully to regain the country through a military coup. Obote supporters within the Ugandan Army, predominantly from the Acholi and Lango ethnic groups, were also involved in the coup. Amin responded by bombing Tanzanian  towns  and purging the Army of Acholi and Lango officers. The ethnic violence grew to include the whole of the Army, and then Ugandan civilians, as Amin became increasingly paranoid. The Nile Mansions Hotel in Kampala became infamous as Amins interrogation and torture center, and Amin is said to have moved residences regularly to avoid assassination attempts. His killer squads, under the official titles of State Research Bureau and Public Safety  Unit,  were responsible for tens of thousands of abductions and murders. Amin personally ordered the execution of the Anglican Archbishop of Uganda, the chancellor of Makerere College, the governor of the Bank of Uganda, and several of his own parliamentary ministers. Economic War In 1972, Amin declared economic war on Ugandas Asian population, a group that dominated Ugandas trade and manufacturing sectors as well as a significant portion of the civil service. Seventy thousand Asian holders of British passports were given three months to leave the country, and the abandoned businesses were handed over to Amins supporters. Amin severed diplomatic ties with Britain and nationalized 85 British-owned businesses. He also expelled Israeli military advisors, turning instead to Colonel Muammar Muhammad al-Gadhafi of Libya and the Soviet Union for support. Leadership Amin was considered by many to be a gregarious, charismatic leader, and he was often portrayed by the international press as a popular figure. In 1975, he was elected chair of the Organisation of African Unity (though  Julius Kambarage Nyerere, president of Tanzania, Kenneth David  Kaunda,  president of Zambia, and  Seretse Khama, president of Botswana, boycotted the meeting). A  United Nations  condemnation was blocked by African heads of state. Hypomania Popular legend claims that Amin was involved in blood rituals and cannibalism. More authoritative sources suggest he may have suffered from hypomania, a form of manic depression characterized by irrational behavior and emotional outbursts. As his paranoia became more pronounced, Amin imported troops from Sudan and Zaire. Eventually, less than 25 percent of the Army was Ugandan. Support for his regime faltered as accounts of Amins atrocities reached the international press. The Ugandan economy suffered, with inflation eclipsing 1,000%. Exile In October 1978, with the assistance of Libyan troops, Amin attempted to annex Kagera, the northern province of Tanzania (which shares a border with Uganda). Tanzanian president  Julius Nyerere responded by sending troops into Uganda, and with the aid of rebel Ugandan forces they were able to capture the Ugandan capital of Kampala. Amin fled to Libya, where he stayed for almost 10 years before finally relocating to Saudi Arabia. He remained there in exile for the remainder of his life. Death On August 16, 2003, Amin died in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The cause of death was reported as multiple organ failure. Although the Ugandan government announced that his body could be buried in Uganda, he was quickly buried in Saudi Arabia. Amin was never tried for his gross abuse of  human rights. Legacy Amins brutal reign has been the subject of numerous books, documentaries, and dramatic films, including Ghosts of Kampala, The Last King of Scotland, and General Idi Amin Dada: A Self Portrait. Often depicted in his time as an eccentric buffoon with delusions of grandeur, Amin is now considered one of historys cruelest dictators.
